Ryan Figert and Mickaela Leal awarded Rockwall High School Jacket Backers March Athletes of the Month
Congratulations to Jacket Backer March Athletes of the Month Ryan Figert and Mickaela Leal! Listed below are all of the outstanding accomplishments made by theses athletes during the month of March.
Mickaela is a competitor and knows how to handle pressure at such a young age. She is still very much a sweet freshman until you put a soccer ball in front of her; then, she becomes a fierce athlete who demands the best of those around her. She demands even more of herself, so as not to let her teammates down. She is a force to be reckoned with, and the Lady Jackets have her for 3 more years!!! Her best is yet to come!
Ryan was a starting varsity defender for every game this month.
Ryan is a leader on the soccer team through his work ethic and positive attitude. He is one of the top five players in minutes played this year. He plays a vital role on our team as a defender, but also as our long throw player on throw-ins around the opponents penalty box.
Ryan excels academically and is such a dependable person and player. He is a hard worker and is very coachable. I have great expectations for him next year, his senior year.

Congratulations to Sarah Graves, Jackson Padilla and Brooks Helmer who were awarded as the February Jacket Backer Athletes of the Month! Listed below are all of the outstanding accomplishments made by theses athletes during the month of February.
Sarah is an athlete all coaches would want on their team! She’s an amazing leader and has been a rock to the varsity gymnastics program since her freshman year. As a dual-varsity athlete in gymnastics and track, she has been able to maintain great grades, a positive attitude, and a contagious work ethic even through injuries.
"I have been blessed to have coached Sarah since her 7th grade year. I have had the privilege of watching her grow from a young, bubbly girl to an amazing, respectful, faithful young lady. While I am going to miss Sarah so very much, I am excited to see what her future holds." Coach Stephanie Tyson
Jackson is an outstanding young man working hard at all times, who has the respect of not only his teammates, but also of the district coaches and his teachers whom all speak highly of him.

RHS soccer season ends with area round losses
Both of Rockwall High School's District 11-6A champion soccer teams were eliminated in the area round of the UIL's postseason playoffs Friday night. The RHS girls, who'd won 19 games and had been beaten only once, were outscored 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout at Garland Naaman Forest. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime and 2-2 through the regulation 80 minutes and two overtime periods. Additional game photos located at 03-31-2017_RHS_vs_Nameen_Area The Yellowjacket boys (16-6) were on friendly turf at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium, but were quickly at a disadvantage as Sachse (17-3) turned a corner kick into a goal less than five minutes into the game. Giovanni Castillo scored twice for the Mustangs, who also received goals from Jonathan Castillo and Hugo Mora. Published March 31, 2017 by John Markon may be reached at editor@heraldbanner.com. |
Mote makes RHS history
On Feb. 25, Rockwall High School junior Jackie Mote made history as the first Lady Jacket to make an all-state wrestling team. She lost in the third place match against Jesenia Gaytan, giving her a fourth place finish in the 215-pound 6A Division and a 25-8 overall record. Even in defeat, Mote was happy about what she accomplished at the state tournament. “I’m so honored because I’ve been working so hard for this ever since my freshman year,” Mote said. “And it’s always been a dream of mine to get my name on the wall underneath that category. Just to see that happen, I was really excited after my match.” Mote is no stranger to making Rockwall history. In 2014, she became the first female wrestler in RHS program history. After attending one of her brother Travis’ middle school wrestling matches, Mote said she was interested in the sport. “It was so interesting that I had to come to practice that Monday because I thought it was so much fun,” Mote said. From there, she quit basketball and focused on wrestling. Mote said her first year was the most difficult. As the only girl, she had to start the program, go to all these girls tournaments without knowing anything and then figure it out all by herself. Even though it was difficult, she says her male teammates were very supportive. “All of the guys were supportive and they really helped me become the wrestler I am today,” Mote said. “I couldn’t’ have done it without them or my coach.” |
These days things are much different than they were two years ago. Mote said she is joined by seven other female wrestlers now who are all freshmen. “They’re all in the same situation I was in my freshman year,” Mote said. “So it’s good to be able to help them and they know what I’m going through. It’s really easy to talk to them because it’s like I have a support system now.” Mote said this year’s state experience was special because she had other girls to come with her. It was also her best finish at state. This was her third appearance at the state tournament. Her first two appearances ended in first round losses in the 165-pound weight class. In three years, Mote has grown to love wrestling. She said she most enjoys the connection she has made with the team. “You spend so much time together cutting weight and working out,” Mote said. “You get groups together to go cut weight after practice and form such a good team bond with each other. They’re my brothers and sisters.” Mote and her “brothers and sisters” are currently in offseason, where they lift weights three days a week and wrestle and run the other two days. Mote is currently sidelined with an injury, but looks forward to rejoining the team. When she does, she said she has her eyes on the gold. “I’d love to bring home the state title,” Mote said. “That’s a goal I’m going to be working on all offseason and all during the summer to be the best that I can be so I can bring home the gold.” Published February 25, 2017 by John Markon may be reached at editor@heraldbanner.com. |

Jackets' soccer teams advance in playoffs
Rockwall High School's girls and boys soccer teams both earned bi-district round victories Thursday night in Palestine and will advance to next weekend's area round. The RHS girls (19-1) had few anxious moments against Conroe Oak Ridge, taking a 3-0 lead at halftime on their way to a 6-0 win. Rockwall's next opponent will be the winner of a Friday night match between Lake Highlands and Garland Naaman Forest. The Yellowjacket boys had a tougher time with Conroe, but grabbed a 1-0 lead on an ice-breaking second half goal by Harper Roland and led 2-0 before winning, 2-1. Next up for the RHS boys (15-5) is the winner of a Friday night game between Sachse and Richardson Pearce. We will update next week's pairings when they are available. Nicole Pugsley and Mckay Larman awarded Rockwall High School Jacket Backers December Athletes of the Month
Congratulations to the January Jacket Backer Athletes of the Month Nicole Pugsley, soccer and Mckay Larman, gymnastics
Nicole was voted by her teammates as a leader this year; she leads her team both on and off the field, setting a high expectation by leading by example. She is a 3-sport athlete who strives to improve her teammates the best she can. She is willing to do whatever the team needs of her at any given time.
Nicole is one of the most talented and inspirational kids I’ve had the privilege to coach over the past 4 years. She leads by example both on and off the field. Her teachers make it a point to let me know how she stands out in the classroom as well. Nicole has been a backbone for this team since her freshman year, and in the beginning of her senior year she has not disappointed! Her contributions to the team have garnered her a captain’s role two years in a row, and less than a week ago she committed herself to continue her education and playing career at the University of Texas – El Paso.
1/26/17: RHS vs Highland Park (Optional – Harder): Mckay scored and placed: Floor – 9.0 (2nd)/Pommel Horse – 8.0 (8th)/Rings – 8.9 (3rd)/Vault – 9.1 (3rd)/Parallel Bars – 9.3 (2nd)/High Bar – 8.3 (4th)/All-Around – 52.6 (2nd)
Mckay is the team captain of an undefeated gymnastics team that currently ranks 4th or better in the state in every category. Mckay has scored for the team in 11 out of 12 of the events he competed in during the month of January. He has this team focused and working well together. Mckay has also personally put together team bonding activities outside of school.
Mckay has done a great job getting this team to work together on a daily basis. Our guys continue to improve because of the team atmosphere in our gym. Teammates are always helping each other learn skills that they have already mastered. This is creating a great deal of team depth to ensure more consistency as the year goes on. Mckay has played a large part of developing that type of mentality.

RHS girls awaiting reckoning
To hear the recruiting experts tell it, the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area is to girls soccer as Southern California is to beach volleyball — or perhaps as Alaska is to sled dog racing. Every district at every level seems to have at least one or two state championship contenders. Glittering won-lost records and goal-scorers with high-powered resumes seem to be just about everywhere. Which brings us to Rockwall High School’s girls, 17-1 and on the verge of completing an unprecedented victory tour through District 11-6A. Going into tonight’s regular-season finale at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium against North Mesquite, RHS is 13-0 in district games and has scored 55 goals vs. district opponents while allowing only 1. The Lady Jackets had a zero in the goals against column until last Friday, when they gave one up on the road against district runner-up Tyler Lee. Rockwall went on to win the game in a penalty kick shootout. So, how good are they? Opinions differ. The Texas Girls Coaches Association poll ranks Rockwall 12th in the state in Class 6A. Top Drawer Soccer, which ranks the top 20 Texas teams in both 6A and 5A, doesn’t rank Rockwall at all. More locally, the Jackets were ninth among Metroplex 6A schools in the Dallas Morning News’ most recent rankings. The Lady Jackets’ only loss, a 4-0 setback against Sachse (20-1), has also produced some skepticism. “We know where we’re ranked and we know what teams are ranked ahead of us,” said senior midfielder Madi Arenas. “We’re looking forward to playing those teams in the playoffs.” “I think one issue we have with the rankings is that we don’t have that 30-goal scorer or that top-drawer Division I recruit,” added coach Melissa Garcia. “You don’t see us running our offense through one or two designated scorers. We’re more of a team than a star or two with a supporting cast.” It isn’t that the Jackets lack good players or Division I signees. Senior midfielder Nicole Pugsley will play in Conference USA next season with Texas-El Paso. Garcia’s offensive system, however, allows players to fill multiple roles and promotes balanced goal scoring. Forward Lauren Baker, perhaps the closest thing Rockwall has to a designated striker, didn’t have the team lead in scoring until Monday night, when she hit the back of the net three times in an 8-0 road rout of Mesquite. |
The Jackets also have younger, unheralded players in key spots. Beginning with the opening game, their starting goalkeeper has been Mickaela Leal, a freshman. Their igniter on offense is hyperactive forward Alana Wickham, a sophomore.
“Alana is just an explosive, ball-of-energy type player,” Garcia said. “From the first day of practice, Mickaela showed unbelievable confidence and maturity for her age. But no one outside our team knew about either one of them before this season.” Young as they are, Wickham and Leal mesh well with their older teammates and with Garcia’s preference for a professional, sportsmanlike attitude on the field. Rockwall players do very little emoting after close calls and can be downright modest in terms of celebrating after goals, particularly goals that come with the Jackets already holding a comfortable lead. “When we score, we are more excited than we can look,” Pugsley said. “In a one-sided game, there’s also an element of respect for the other team involved." “I actually liked the way we handled giving up that goal to Tyler Lee. We played better after they scored it than we had before they scored it. We won the game. In the playoffs, I think you’ll see us letting it go a little more on the field.” The playoffs don’t begin until March 23. Rockwall’s bi-district opener will likely be against a team from the Houston or Austin area, but any wins after that will come at the expense of home-area heavyweights. Last year’s Jackets made it all the way to the regional final, where they were roadblocked in decisive fashion by Highland Park. “We won’t really know how good we are until the playoff games,” Wickham said. “We’ve known that all year. Now, it’s time to play those games.” Published March 10, 2017 by John Markon may be reached at editor@heraldbanner.com. |

This Saturday the Jackets participated in the McKinney Boyd Bronco Relays. The weather started out a little bit on the chilly side, but eventually became quite pleasant. This was a very competitive meet that had up to 14-18 teams in each division. The format of this meet is a little different from what the kids have or will experience throughout the season, but we did come away with some good evaluations and a few kids did set some new Personal Best performances. Overall the teams placed:
Next Saturday the teams will be competing in Mesquite at the Carl Norris Relays @ Hanby Stadium. ![]()

Jackets advance with 3OT win over South Garland
RICHARDSON — Cameron Crayton went to his left, which made everything right for the junior guard and his Rockwall Yellowjackets. A short, soft left-handed floater by Crayton with two seconds remaining in the third overtime period found the net and gave Rockwall a 61-60 win over South Garland Friday night in a well-attended, highly dramatic 6A area round playoff game at Berkner High School. "I'm left-handed," Crayton said afterward, "so it's natural I'd go that way. I also don't mind taking the last shot. If someone has to take it, I'm OK with doing it." Crayton made the shot under defensive pressure from South Garland's Jayden McGrew. The Colonels, who'd gained a 60-59 lead on a pair of free throws by Tyrese Maxey with 44 seconds to play, lost despite getting 35 points from Maxey, a 6-2 sophomore shooting guard. Rockwall (22-10) will now face Dallas Jesuit (22-11) in the Region 2 quarterfinals early next week. Jesuit advanced with a 70-64 area around win over The Woodlands Friday night. Crayton had 18 points and sophomore forward Sam Williamson 16 for Rockwall. South Garland (17-10) had the last shot in regulation, but Rockwall's Tevin Williams got a small piece of a shot by Maxey to send the game into the first overtime. Rockwall had the final shots in the first two overtime periods, but a pair of well-defended attempts by Williamson fell short. "These kinds of games are harder on me as a coach than they ever were as a player," said first-year RHS head coach Quincey Williams. "We wanted Cam to have the last shot in this one. He's won a couple other games just like that for us this season. We thought we could get him the ball, give him a chance and let him do what he does." Jacket girls advance with win over Sachse
WYLIE — Rallying after a second-quarter meltdown, Rockwall High School's girls basketball team posted a 46-45 win over Sachse Friday night at Wylie High School in the area round of the Texas 6A playoffs. Sophomore Jordan Mathis had 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half to lead Rockwall (24-9). Sachse's Avery Crouse netted 16 points to lead all scorers. Rockwall held a 13-6 lead in the final minute of the first period, but was outscored 22-4 over the next nine minutes and trailed, 28-17, at the half. The Lady Jackets needed a dramatic turnaround in the third quarter and got it, outscoring the Mustangs 19-4 and retaking the lead. The fourth quarter was back-and-forth with Mathis scoring the clinching basket for RHS with 34 seconds remaining. Faith Mason-Vestal (12 points) and Haley Hicks (9) were other players who were major contributors in the second half for Rockwall. The loss ended Sachse's season at 27-7. Rockwall advances to the Region 2 quarterfinals and will meet Dallas Skyline (22-12) on Tuesday night at Poteet High School (3300 Poteet Drive) in Mesquite. Game time will be 7 pm. Rockwal Jacket Soccer
The Jackets hosted Heath last night in their second district match of the season. JV played to a 2-2 tie in a high-paced back and forth game. Andrew Galicia and Micah Gonzalez scored for Rockwall. A pumped up Varsity Jackets kicked off and nearly scored in 14 seconds. 3 minutes later, though, Jackson Padilla Drew first blood by chipping the Keeper after an awesome pass from Harper Roland. 10 minutes after that Jackson put another shot on goal that the keeper couldn’t handle. Heath got one back after a quick counter attack shortly after our second goal. Later in the second half a hot Jackson Padilla sliced up the defense and found a waiting Isaiah Perez with a sublime pass across the box. The team played really well across the board. That brings us to 2-0 in district and puts us in 2nd place. |
Rockwall Claims I-30 Battle In Soccer
Cross-town rival night, and it did not disappoint! The Lady Jackets traveled to the other side of town for the next big challenge, and the Lady Hawks gave us our money's worth; however, your Lady Jackets would not back down from a good fight! The JV opened up the action by dominating the Lady Hawks for 70 minutes, but in true soccer form, the score was 1-0. If you had been there, the excitement was far greater than the score reflects. From that point, the varsity took over. We found the back of the net twice in the 2nd half to come away with the victory! From the goalkeeper to the forwards, it was a total team effort, and it was exciting! So proud of these young ladies!
Tuesday night, we will take on the Lady Lobos from Longview at Wilkerson-Sanders stadium! Action starts with the JV at 5:30PM and the varsity at 7:15PM.

RISD swim, dive teams compete in championships
In what was a first -— but almost certainly won’t be a “last” — swim and dive teams from Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath high schools were in direct competition at last Saturday’s District 9-6A championships for boys and girls at the Rockwall Aquatic Center. This is the first year in Class 6A for Heath, which had competed at lower levels since it was opened in 2005. Close meets were anticipated and final scores didn’t disappoint, with Rockwall-Heath scoring 166 points to Rockwall’s 155 in the boys’ meet and RHS turning the tables in the girls’ meet, scoring 165 points to Heath’s 159. Heath had two quadruple winners. Freshman Logan Graham won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles for boys in addition to swimming on two winning relays. For the Heath girls, Ashley Conrad won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and swam on two first-place relays. Rockwall’s Amanda Armstrong was also a double winner in individual events, taking the 50- and 100-yard freestyles for girls. Qualifying swimmers and divers from both teams will return to the Aquatic Center on Feb. 2-3 for a regional championship meet. DISTRICT 9-6A BOYS MEET

Aurelia Incristi, Ethan Dupre and Mya Culliver awarded Rockwall High School Jacket Backers December Athletes of the Month
Congratulations to Your Jacket Backer December Athletes of the Month Mya Culliver, Aurelia Incristi and Ethan Dupre! Please read the about all the outstanding things their coaches had to say about these stellar athletes below!
Also nominated in the Month of December were:
Varsity Captain, all-tournament team in Knights of Columbus Tournament, hit game-winning free throws in back-to-back tournament games at the Aggieland Invitational.
Mya helped lead our team to a 2nd-place finish in the Knights of Columbus Tournament and a 3rd-place finish (out of 31 teams) in the Aggieland Invitational. She is a role model to future Lady Jackets on and off the court. Her impeccable leadership skills on the court are vital to the success of the Lady Jackets.
Mya is someone that displays the Lady Jacket Way. She comes to practice every day with the drive and energy to help maximize her teammates’ potential. Mya RISE’s above the line in all she does…both academically and athletically.
Aurelia Incristi (submitted by Coach Paul Wallace)
Aurelia shows up every single day and gives 100% regardless of what is going on in her life. There are numerous nights where she stays up until 1 or 2 AM and gets to 6:30AM practice EARLY, without an ounce of complaining! She moved from Austin, Tx a couple seasons ago and when she got here, her swimming needed a lot of technique work. Aurelia's overall development as an athlete needed to improve drastically in order to not only compete on this team but on the district and regional level. She took it upon herself to ask questions on a daily/ weekly/ monthly basis to better understand, not only what she does wrong, but also what she does right and how to improve in both areas of her swimming. This has taken her from not on the radar for Rockwall Swimming, to 1 of my 4 fastest girls that has competed at the state level. She has not set any records, but to see where she has come from to where she is now. She is the perfect example of Lady Jacket Athlete of the Month, and is as deserving as an athlete that has set records to be acknowledged for her commitment to her high school, her swim team, and herself.
She is a consistent, committed, giver of herself to her teammates and her team. Aurelia will do whatever necessary to bring positive energy to the pool deck, I cannot say enough about what her drive, mentality and pursuit of excellence has done for our team both in and out of the pool.
Ethan Dupre (submitted by Coach Paul Wallace)
This is tough for me to answer. Because most of our achievements don’t happen until the end of January and Middle/ End of February. Ethan Dupre is a lot like Aurelia, He calms down any negative issues on my team for the most part before they even get to me. If he has an issue with anything, he not only wants to address it but also develop a solution as well to better all parties involved.
I think the YellowJacket Athlete of the Month is defined by a student athlete that demonstrates the characteristics both in and out of the respective sports to represent RHS on a higher level. Ethan has done that since he was a freshman, he is a mature beyond his years which has led to me trusting in him really since he was a freshman to handle situations that maybe an upperclassman should have dealt with, but he could handle it and process it accordingly. I go to him many times to make sure the direction the team is heading feels good to him as well as others on the team. He already has his name on the record board multiple times, I think he deserves it because of the way he carries himself through both good and bad times and even more importantly when he is not in a swim suit.
If you would like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview, please contact Rachel Cassady.

Matt Jones and Sydney Garber awarded Rockwall High School Jacket Backers October Athletes of the Month
The Rockwall High School Jacket Backers have selected Matt Jones as the “Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month” submitted by Coach Rodney Webb.
Matt, a senior on the varsity football team led the Jacket football team to a 3-0 record. In these three games, he passed for 852 yards and 6 TD's, rushed for 148 yards, caught a game-winning TD pass, and had a 41-yard punting average. Matt has been a consistent performer for the Jackets all season, but he has upped his game late in the season, when it matters most. Much of the Jackets' October success is attributable to his on the field play and leadership by example, both on and off the field. Matt had an outstanding October, giving his best when his best was needed. Other nominees include Matthew Watkins (golf). She is a very consistent player and one that leads by example. Sydney's hard work has paid off for her as she has earned a scholarship to UTA. She is a leader every day and it is good to know that we will have a consistent low score from Sydney from one tournament to the next. She puts in the work and it's great to have her on the Lady Jacket golf team. Other nominees include Maddie Null (cross country). "War on the Shore” event on Saturday, Nov. 12th
The world’s toughest sport took on the world’s toughest opponent in the “War on the Shore” event on Saturday, Nov. 12, which saw Rockwall and Lovejoy youth, middle school and high school wrestlers battle it out on the mat at The Harbor to raise funds for cancer research. Rockwall and Lovejoy wrestling partnered with Pin Cancer – a nonprofit organization which raises funds for cancer research through the sport of wrestling – for the event set against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Ray Hubbard. Thanks to the joint effort by both wrestling programs, over $5,600 was raised through donations and sponsorships. All the proceeds benefited Pin Cancer and St. Jude Children’s Hospital for patient care and cancer research. When Rockwall High School Wrestling coaches Wesley Pohorsky and Mike McMahon discussed putting on an outdoor wrestling event to raise money for cancer last fall, the idea gained a lot of support from the Rockwall Wrestling community. Rockwall wrestling’s Chris Vermillion works a breakdown during his match against his Lovejoy High School opponent. “I do not know an individual who has not been impacted in some way by cancer, be it a family member, friend, or friend of a friend,” said Coach McMahon. “Cancer is a vicious animal and Pin Cancer gave us a platform to help in their battle, allowing us to raise funds for patient care and research initiatives for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. “I could not be more proud of our kids, Rockwall Wrestling, past and present, and the entire Rockwall community, for supporting our event. The wrestlers were the ones on the mat, battling for a great cause. All involved walked away better people by supporting both high school programs as they wrestled for a cure. A lot of people came together to make this happen and that is a testament to the family that makes up the Rockwall Wrestling community. We cannot thank our sponsors, supporters, and the City of Rockwall enough for making this a memorable event, a memory that will last a lifetime as we do our part in helping others.” Story and photos by Austin Wells, Blue Ribbon News. |
