Jacket Backers May Athletes of the Month.
Chika Nwuamadi, Liah Collins, Rose Njoku, and Morgan Hickmon receive Rockwall High School Jacket Backers May “Lady Jacket Athletes of the Month” Awards.
The Rockwall High School Jacket Backers, have selected sophomore Chika Nwuamadi, freshman Liah Collins, senior Rose Njoku, and junior Morgan Hickmon, as the “Lady Jacket Athletes of the Month”. The ladies were nominated by track coach William McCrary. These four Lady Jacket athletes are the girls track 4 x 400 relay team. They qualified for the Jesuit Sheaner Relays where they placed 5th, and qualified for the Texas Relays placing 17th out of 80 teams. At the Rockin' "R" Relays, they broke the meet record by three seconds. They have also broken the Rockwall High School record by .55 of a second, making them the #5 team in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and #3 team in the 11-6A district. “This is a very special group of young ladies. They have developed a special bond. When one leg has a not so good leg, then the others have sensed that and picked up the slack. Each week there has not been anyone even close to them. This is what amazes me, when you run the times they are running and you are not even being pushed by other teams. that usually comes when you are chasing or you are in a group of people. They have set their sights on getting to Austin for the State Meet in May,” said Coach William McCrary. Also nominated: Katie Reeves (golf). Lady Jacket relay places ninth
AUSTIN — Rockwall’s girls 4x400-meter relay team waited more than two hours to run for less than four minutes.
Originally scheduled to run at about 9:20 p.m. on Saturday at the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championships, the Lady Jackets didn’t start their race until about 11:25 p.m. due to a six-hour storm delay that backed up the schedule at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Then when Rockwall finally did run the Lady Jackets’ team of Chika Iwuamadi, Rose Njoku, Morgan Hickmon and Liah Collins finished ninth in the Class 6A division with a time of 3 minutes, 59.13 seconds. The time was well off the school record 3:48.07 the Lady Jackets clocked at the Region II meet in Waco to finish second, qualifying them for their first state berth in that event since 2005. Iwuamadi, who is a sophomore, took fourth at the region meet in the 400-meter dash while Njoku was sixth in the high jump.
Had Rockwall been able to match its school record the Lady Jackets would have finished fifth at state behind Fort Bend Hightower (3:42.06), Houston Cy Springs (3:43.06), McKinney Boyd (3:45.41) and DeSoto (3:46.73,).
DeSoto locked up the 6A girls team title with 79 points as Cy Springs was second (60) and Cedar Hill (43) took third.
A second-place finish in the boys 4x400-meter relay at 3:14.22 enabled DeSoto to also win the 6A boys team title with 54 points. Manvel was second with 50 and Mansfield finished third (36).
The storm delay started at 12:27 p.m. after the threat of lightning caused UIL officials to evacuate Myers Stadium. Every time a flash of lightning was spotted in the distance, the meet was delayed another 30 minutes. The meet finally resumed at about 6:30.
Classes A and 4A, which were to run on Saturday afternoon, had their running events moved to Saturday evening, joining the 2A and 6A events that were already scheduled.

Rockwall Lady Jackets Soccer top Naaman Forest Rangers 4.0
Tuesday night the Rockwall Lady Jackets took on the Naaman Forest Rangers at Wilkerson Sanders Stadium in Rockwall. The Lady Jackets won the district 11-6A match by a commanding score of 4-0. The game from the opening kickoff was pretty much controlled by the Lady Jackets midfield, and stayed that way through the entire game with Rockwall maintaining possession close to 70% of the time. Rockwall started the first half with a fairly strong wind in their face. They threatened early with forward Lauren Baker just missing a shot wide of the post. Rockwall finally got on the board in the first half when midfielder Nicole Pugsley received a pass from the backline and carried it most of the way up the field and hit Senior Forward Bailey Wooten. Wooten found the back of the net with 10 minutes left in the half to make it 1-0. 2 minutes later, Lauren Baker dribbled through Naaman’s backline and placed a great shot past the keeper to make it 2-0. That’s how it stayed to the halftime whistle. Second half… the Lady Jackets started right where they left off in the first half. They nearly scored on the opening kickoff with a shot that bounced off the post and the Naaman defender was able to clear the ball before Micah Larkin could get to it to put in the rebound. Naaman did threaten a couple of times but the defense stepped up and responded. Sophomore Kayla Campbell made an outstanding play shutting down a potential open goal scoring opportunity from a Ranger forward when Patterson came out of the goal. Naaman had a couple of other threats, but the backline of Sanchez, Rylie Robertson, Campbell and Katelynn Luera stepped up to make plays. The two final Rockwall scores were from Lauren Baker at 12 min into the second half and Sophomore Ariell Hopkins, who froze a Naaman defender with some beautiful footwork, and hit a hard back post shot from about 20 yards out with 8 minutes left in the game to make it 4-0 in favor of the Lady Jackets. The win puts the Lady Jackets at 3 Wins and 0 Losses in district play, setting up this Friday’s contest with undefeated, state and nationally ranked, Sachse as one of the top games of District 11-6A play. Lady Jackets Soccer
Friday night, the Lady Jackets soccer team hosted Lakeview Centennial in a district 11-6A competition. The game started off with both teams figuring each other out. Rockwall threatened early with some great runs and crosses from midfielders Micah Larkin and Ariell Hopkins to the forwards, but the Patriots' defense managed to make a play each time to stave off any score. The game stayed pretty much even throughout the mid mark way through the first half, when junior midfielder Nicole Pugsley found herself with the ball and a good open look at the goal from about 30 yards out. She landed a nice hard strike with the ball on frame that sailed over the Lakeview keeper’s head and dropped in the back of the net! Lady Jackets up 1-0!! The remainder of the half Rockwall was only threatened a couple of times, but the back line of the Lady Jackets held up, and Senior Kristina Patterson had a couple of nice saves to keep the Lady Jackets in command on the score board through to the halftime whistle. In the second half, the Jackets seemed to come out a little flat and allowed the Patriots to gain a little confidence and momentum. About 10 min in, the Patriots right midfielder got loose along the side and made a text book cross to an on-coming player making a back post run; she one touched it into the goal. 1-1. The Patriots seemed to be starting to control the game a little, however, the Lady Jackets were able to pick up the pace. With about 20 minutes left in the game, Katie Givens received a ball out of the air, got it at her feet and carried it up the field. She saw senior Bailey Wooten start to make a run; Givens played a ball directly over the defense’s backline, Bailey split the two center backs and found herself one on one with the keeper. The Patriot keeper made a hard run at her; as she did, Wooten chipped the ball over her head for a goal. Rockwall took command again on the board 2-1. They also took control of the game from that point on and dominated the midfield and forward play. They had a couple of more opportunities in the next few minutes with some great runs down the left side by Hopkins who played the ball to the middle of the box, and forwards Baker and Wooten just barely missed converting into goals. The final Rockwall goal came with about 7 min left in the game when junior midfielder Micah Larkin made a nice defensive play on one of the Patriot midfielders and carried the ball up the field to about twenty yards out, and played a beautiful through ball splitting the defenders to sophomore Lauren Baker. Baker made a great move to juke the charging keeper and just calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. The Lady Jackets were firmly in command 3-1, and that’s how it stayed until the time ran out. The intensity, speed of play, and team work of the Lady Jackets displayed in the last 20 to 25 minutes of the game completely took away any threat that Lakeview could muster. The win pushed the Lady Jackets to their second district win in two games! Their next action will be another home game when they will host Naaman Forest Tuesday night, February 2, at 7:15PM, at Wilkerson Sanders Stadium. The Lady Jackets Junior Varsity started the night off with an exciting run on the Lady Patriots with two goals from freshman, Ana Gonzalez and one from freshman Sabrina Smith. The defense held the Patriots to no goals with leadership from sophomore Annie McKee and junior Lauren Coon. The JV jackets are also undefeated in district play as they continue action on Tuesday! Lady Jacket Soccer is under way!!!
Let's talk soccer!!!! Your Lady Jackets have gotten started in a hurry over the last 9 days, 2 teams, 11 games, 750 minutes!! Both JV1 and Varsity started the new year with a scrimmage against Lovejoy HS on January 2nd; we had a clean sweep with scores of 8-1 and 3-0, respectively! Tuesday, before coming back to school, the ladies once again took the field for one last scrimmage against the Longview Lobos; while JV1 nearly missed a tie, the varsity won 4-0! Back to school and back on the field! Both teams headed out to their own tournaments this weekend! JV1 played in Mesquite while the Varsity traveled to Highland Park. On Thursday afternoon, the JV1 started their tournament run with a quick 3-0 victory over the hosting Skeeters. Friday night, the JV1 took on Highland Park. The ladies took it to them, winning convincingly 3-0! Saturday would be an eventful day!! They would need to finish pool play against Richardson, which they did winning in a most convincing fashion, 6-0; then, they had to get ready for the championship game at 4PM on the same day against Frisco Reedy (new school). The ladies took an early lead ,1-0, going into halftime, and they were able to maintain dominance to win the game and the tournament title!!! Whew! 30 second timeout for a breather...oh wait no timeouts in soccer... Push through!!! On the Varsity side of the ball, the Lady Jackets headed to Highland Park. First game up was against regionally ranked, defending Elite 8 finalist, Cedar Park out of Austin. The pace was fast and furious and in Jacket style the ladies played well, with the game ending 0-0! Friday morning, they headed back to D-town to play another very talented team out of Austin, Lake Travis. The ladies felt the need to avenge their football brothers’ loss, so using the momentum from Thursday afternoon, they found their way to the back of the net twice, winning 2-1. Their final game would come Saturday at 2PM. The tournament title would come down to the last game of the tournament, and the ladies put it away in Jacket Fight Fashion, winning both the game and the tournament! Needless to say these girls are exhausted! It was a great start for the ladies' soccer teams! We couldn’t be more proud of them! If you see them on Monday, pat them on the back, but not too hard!!! Love these girls!!!! Jacket Fight Never Dies!! (Photos by Terry Cookston) |

Bittersweet: Wild ride for Rockwall ends in regional finals against Lake Travis, 45-24
COLLEGE STATION - Rockwall tried one last rally but found the mountain built by perennial state power Lake Travis a bit too steep. Rockwall outscored Lake Travis in the second half but was defeated, 45-24, in a Class 6A Division II state quarterfinals.
Rockwall (10-4) fell behind by 25 first-half points and found itself facing a task as daunting at climbing out of Texas A&M's cavernous, newly renovated, 102,000-seat Kyle Field. A five-time state champ, Lake Travis (14-0) scored on all five of its first-half possessions to lead 35-10 at halftime. Lake Travis needed just 22 plays to have four different players score touchdowns in less than six minutes of possession.
"They are a little better than us, for sure, the moment got to us a little bit," Rockwall coach Rodney Webb said. "We made some very uncharacteristic mistakes in the first half. Nobody can make those against Lake Travis. Some visible to everybody in the stands but some were subtle things."
Scoring the most against of any Lake Travis playoff opponent, Rockwall pulled within 35-17 in the third quarter after forcing two punts. But Lake Travis responded with its only second-half score to quell the rally. Lake Travis will play Mansfield (12-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waco ISD Stadium with the winner going to the 6A DII championship.
Rockwall's season will be memorable for its comebacks. Starting 0-3 against a difficult non-district slate including Denton Ryan and Euless Trinity, Rockwall rebounded with a district title. In three playoff wins, Rockwall was either tied at half or trailed in the fourth quarter in wins over Copperas Cove, Jesuit and Spring.
Senior running back Caleb Broach sparked another second-half surge with a 72-yard run setting up his 4-yard scoring run, but Rockwall never pulled closer than three scores.
"It hurts; Lake Travis doesn't shoot itself in the foot and we did," Broach said. "We just couldn't make up for it in the second half. They were physical, you have to earn everything."
Lake Travis was near flawless behind junior quarterback Charlie Brewer. The son of former Richardson and Texas quarterback Robert Brewer, the latest Brewer was 15-of-18 passing for 244 yards and four touchdowns.
The powerful, 5-9, 195-pound Broach rushed for 238 yards with two touchdowns in 34 carries. In replacing Chris Warren, now a freshman starter at Texas, Broach's first full season in the backfield ended with 1,887 yards with 28 touchdowns on 249 carries.
"It's been a blessing to have these coaches and all the hard-working teammates," Broach said. "That's what I'll remember most."

Rockwall HS Yellowjackets dismantle Naaman Forest, 78-0
GARLAND – The Rockwall Yellowjackets scoring machine scored 11 of the first 12 times it had the ball last night en route to dismantling Naaman Forest, 78-0.
Because the Yellowjackets (3-3, 3-0) defense held the Rangers (0-6, 0-3) to just 65 yards total offense and only six first downs, Rockwall consistently had a short field and the offense found it difficult NOT to score.
Rockwall’s defense and special teams also recovered two of the Rangers’ five fumbles.
Running back Caleb Broach ran for three first-quarter touchdowns for 15, 4 and 14 yards, and Will Reed threw a four-yard strike to Luke Termin, giving Rockwall a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
In the second quarter, Reed connected on 53 and 19 yard TD passes to Sam Crawford and Cameron Crayton. Then A.J. Blacknall broke loose for a 50-yard TD run down the sideline and Jacob Viquez nailed a 37-yard field goal to end the half with the Yellowjackets ahead, 51-0.
In the second half, the Yellowjackets primarily ran the ball to keep the score down and take time off the clock. But it didn’t matter because running back Allison Strange took over and ran for most of his team-leading 90 yards, scoring once from four yards out.
Backup quarterback Matt Jones rushed for two TDS on 5 and 18 yards and even third-string quarterback Reed Rakow threw a 6-yard pass to Mason Parr.
Viquez kicked 6 of 7 extra points and Grant Freeman kicked 3 of 4.
The Yellowjackets amassed 505 yards total offense, including 304 on the ground.

Jackets Drop Season Opener To Denton Ryan
The hype of the 2014 season was alive and well for the Rockwall Yellowjackets on Friday night, but it was time to turn the page. The Yellowjackets jumped out with a great defensive hold to start the game against the Raiders of Denton Ryan. In fact, the defense looked great in the opening half only allowing a potent Raider team to 10 points. However, the Yellowjacket sting that so many felt in 2014 on offense was no where to be found in this game. The Jackets put up a touchdown after Will Reed found Sam Crawford for a 25 yard touchdown strike, but the Raiders found life immediately after and never allowed the Jackets to get within those 3 points. Quarterback Spencer Sanders had a field day against the Jackets defense in the second half, but overall put up 129 yards in the air and one touchdown plus 178 yards on the ground and 3 touchdowns to hand the Jackets their first loss in the regular season since November 8, 2013 against Longview. Stay tuned for the Rockwall Sportscenter Yellowjacket Update for more on the Jackets 31-14 loss to Denton Ryan later this evening.
