Region II-5A Track and Field Meet
The Jackets sent 8 athletes (5 boys and 3 girls) to the Region II-5A Track and Field Meet in Waco this past weekend.
Seniors:
Justin Tokuz in the 3200 & 1600 Meter Runs, Spencer McKee in the 1600 Meter Run and Eric Jones in the 800 Meter Run. These three closed out there careers as Yellow Jackets today, but represented themselves and the school with great pride.
Other athletes who participated were Garrett Dennard in the Pole Vault (tied PR with a 13'0" vault) and Clark Norris in the Pole Vault (tied PR with a 12'6" vault), Sarah Schneider in the Pole Vault (tied PR with a 10'0" vault), Rose Njoku in High Jump and Kaylee Hinton in the 100 M Hurdles (9th) 200 M Dash (10th), Pole Vault (4th), and Long Jump (3rd). Kaylee's 3rd place jump was good enough to earn her a WILD CARD BIRTH to the State Meet in Austin two weeks.
This is how the Wild Card Birth works: There are four regions in Texas; the top two finishers in each region automatically qualify. You then go through each of the four regions and see who has the best 3rd place finish. The one that does will advance as the Wild Card Birth. There are times when that 3rd Place Finisher does better than some of the 1st and 2nd Place finishers from other Regions.
Way to Go Jackets and Good Luck to Kaylee Hinton at State on May 10th @ 2:00 pm.

Bailey Wallace the DMN HS Softball player of the week (4/14)
Bailey Wallace, junior first baseman player for the Rockwall Lady Jackets is the Dallas Morning News HS softball player of the week.
What she did: Wallace was 6-for-7 with two doubles, a home run, six RBIs and five runs in wins over Mesquite Horn and Mesquite. She went 3-for-4 — falling a triple short of hitting for the cycle — and had five RBIs in a 14-2 victory against Mesquite Horn, then the ninth-ranked Class 5A area team. Wallace’s grand slam in the fifth inning ended that game via the mercy rule and put Rockwall in a tie with Horn for first place in District 12-5A. Rockwall has two district games remaining.
Who is she? A junior first baseman
The stats: Wallace is hitting .506 and has 35 RBIs and has scored 35 runs in 25 games. She has 12 extra-base hits, including two home runs.
She said it: “I honestly just thought it was a regular base hit. I was just happy to knock in one run,” Wallace said of her grand slam that helped Rockwall avenge an 8-3 loss to Horn earlier in district play. “We just wanted revenge. Even before my freshman year, Rockwall had always been district champs, and we wanted to keep that going.”
Coach said it: “She has no strikeouts at all in 25 games. ... She has the ability to drive the ball to all fields. There are no gaps in her swing.” — Shadie Acosta
Did you know? Wallace has started every game since she was a freshman. ... Wallace said she would like to become a coach and help kids learn to play softball. She has already worked a Rockwall camp and given a few lessons.

Corporal Fox 3v3 Basketball Charity Event a Huge Success!!!
On March 29th, Rockwall High School was the host for the first ever Corporal Fox 3v3 Basketball Tournament, benefitting Homes for Our Troops. The tournament raised over $2,000, all of which will go directly toward construction costs of the home being built in McClendon Chisholm for severely wounded veteran Corporal Michael Fox.
For those of you who weren't able to make this event, Wyatt Miller did us PROUD! It was a great turnout of current and former athletes, local weekend warriors, and a bunch of awesome volunteers of all ages. We are fortunate to work at a great place and even more fortunate to get to play a part in these kids’ lives. I’m encouraged by their maturity and social conscience. Take a bow RHS, we have amazing kids!
A special thanks to the RISD for waiving facility fees to allow this event to happen.

Athletes of the Month (AOM) Winners Announced
William Rapp Receives “Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month” Award
The Rockwall High School Jacket Backers have selected William Rapp as the “Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month”. Rapp, an 11th grade member of the Varsity Swim Team was nominated by Coach Paul Wallace and chosen by the Jacket Backers board. During the past month, William placed 4th in the 200 yard Freestyle at the Texas UIL 5A State Swimming Championships in Austin following a 2nd place finish at Regionals. William entered the State competition seeded 9th, moved to the 7th position in preliminaries, and finished 4th in finals, getting faster with each swim. His time of 1:40.15 in finals as an All-American Consideration time and was less than a second from the podium! The swim has earned William 1st Team All-State for the 2013-2014 school year.. Said Coach Wallace, “William has demonstrated perseverance like no other Jacket swimmer. During William's freshman and Sophomore years, he barely missed advancing to State by the slimmest of margins. This year's hard work in and out of the pool paid off with his 4th place finish at State. He did and has done a great job to put himself in a position to have had a great swim season. He represents himself well each and every day.” Also nominated for Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month were Austin Grandstaff (Basketball) and Jonathan Clem (Track). If you would like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview, please contact Eric Eldridge at eric@theeldridges.net. |
Sydney Smith Receives “Lady Jacket Athlete of the Month” Award
The Rockwall High School Jacket Backers have selected Sydney Smith as the “Lady Jacket Athlete of the Month”. Sydney, a 11th grade member of the Varsity Soccer Team was nominated by Melissa Garcia and chosen by the Jacket Backers board. During the past month, Sydney had 6 shutouts (no goals allowed in 6 games), a penalty kick victory saving the game tying shot, and also saved a penalty kick in a district game to maintain a shutout. Sydney is one of the hardest working student-athletes at RHS. She gets the girls motivated and keeps their spirits high at practices, during class, on the bus and in the locker room. She is a field player who decided to put her team's needs above her own. She has done an amazing job, and at times keeping the Lady Jackets in games. Her leadership and personality help to mold this team each and every game. She is there for her teammates when they need to be pushed or motivated, even comforted in times of stress. Said Coach Garcia, “Sydney Smith, our force-field in goal, has done exactly what we hope every athlete learns how to do before they leave RHS; she has put others before herself. She plays with heart and love for the game, and more importantly her loyalty to her team is beyond words. Sydney inspires and motivates not only with her actions but her personality. She works hard to lead by example. She brings intensity to games and practices but in an instant can keep the team in stitches when the situation calls for silliness and humor! Sydney Smith is a role model for up and coming players, and I couldn't be more proud that she is a Lady Jacket Soccer player!” Also nominated for Lady Jacket Athlete of the Month were Raena Eldridge (Swimming), Kaitlyn Stark (Track), Peyton Mills and Whitney Wesley (Softball). Lady Jackets complete softball sweep of Heath
Rockwall’s Lady Jacket softball team made it two straight wins over rival Rockwall-Heath with a tough 3-1 victory at the RHHS Softball Complex on Saturday in what may be the final district battle between the softball powers.
Rockwall moves up to Class 6A next season and Heath remains in Class 5A for at least the next two years.
The Lady Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hayley Baker walked and scored on a throwing error off a hit ball by Bailey Wallace.
Heath answered by loading the bases in the bottom of the first, but couldn’t punch in a run. Macy Wilson led off with a single and Lauren Archuleta and Ally Brandvold reached base on walks. But, Rockwall hauled in a fly out and two infield outs to retire the side with three runners stranded.
Rockwall pitcher Emily Cowan and Heath hurler Cami Duffey then battled from the circle with three shutout innings before RHS added a second run in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Jackets scored on a Heath error following an infield grounder by Jocelyn Myers that scored Kindal Sauter, who reached base with a single.
RHHS left runners stranded in its half of the fifth inning, making six for the game.
Peyton Mills and Shelbi Court singled to start the sixth inning, Sauter walked to load the bases and Baker drilled a single to score one run.
Savannah Calhoun saved a run with a perfect throw from center field to catcher Brandvold, who tagged out Court attempting to score.
Heath posted its run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Serenity Gary pounded an RBI single.
Cowan picked up the win with a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts and Duffey booked the loss striking out three over seven innings.
Baker went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Mills was 2-for-3, Alyssa Henry was 2-for-4 and Sauter 1-for-2 to lead Rockwall’s hitting attack.
Heath was led by Wilson, who went 2-for-4 with a double, Gary, who was 1-for-3 with one RBI, and Megan Ford, who was 1-for-2.

Rockwall's Austin Grandstaff DMN Boys Basketball Player of the Week
Congratulations to Rockwall Yellowjacket Austin Grandstaff who was awarded the Dallas Morning News Boys Basketball Player of the Week.
What he did: Grandstaff scored 51 against Wilmer-Hutchins in the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday, as Rockwall went on to win, 81-69. He also scored 15 points on Tuesday as Rockwall come back from a 16-2 deficit and defeated Rockwall-Heath, 56-41, in the final district game. The win moved Rockwall into second place in the district.
Who is he? A 6-5 junior guard.
The stats: Grandstaff is averaging 26.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season.
He said it: “Originally I was thinking 40 and then I started scoring more and more. I was look at the (scoreboard) and it said 49, then I got fouled and hit two free throws. … I hit a lot of mid-range pullups and three pointers. I kind of just played my game but it seemed like everything was going in.”
Coach said it: “He can create his own shot, he can come off a screen and shoot a shot, he can pull up off the dribble and get a shot off. So we do a lot of things for him to get him open, but he’s also able to do a lot of things on his own in creating his shot.” — Alan Simmons
Did you know? Grandstaff had previously pledged to Oklahoma State, but recently reopened the recruiting. He’s rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com and is ranked as the No. 32 prospect nationally for the 2015 class...Rockwall plays Sachse in the Class 5A Region II Bidistrict playoffs on Tuesday.

She is great with her right arm but she’s ambidextrous so she penetrated hard and cut and skipped in a left-handed layup. She did a great job.” — Kasie Brewer

In the opening game of the tournament against Rowlett, the Jackets had a very strong first half, which yielded 3 goals (Micah Day 2, Clay Rittershaus 1). The Jackets had an explosive first half in their second game against N. Dallas and scored three goals. The Jackets played a solid second half keeping the clean sheet and scoring the fourth goal. They finished the match with a 4-0 win.
The Yellowjackets took on the Waxahachie Indians in the tournament Championship game. After moving the ball around the field really well the Jackets began the scoring tally with an awesome volley from Andy Rojas. Clay Rittershaus and Micah Day completed the scoring tally in the first half. Most of the second half was a stale mate until the Indians were rewarded with a PK, which they converted into a goal. Shortly thereafter Dustin Cate notched his first goal of the season off of a cross from Micah Day. The game ended 4-1 and the Yellowjackets were named Champions of the 2014 Waxahachie 287 Soccer Tournament.

Pecora kept the Yellowjacket football team in most every game with his outstanding kicking performances. Not only were his numbers eye-popping, but several of his kicks were during crunch-time, when most high school kickers fail to give their best. “Tony Pecora had the greatest single month of any kicker I've ever coached”, said Coach Webb. Also nominated for this month’s Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month Award were Colt Ramsey (Cross Country) and Adam House (Golf). If you would like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview, please contact Eric Eldridge at eric@theeldridges.net. |

Jackets Win Overtime Thriller Against Mesquite 64-61
In a three-and-a-half-hour game that featured a season's worth of big plays and momentum swings, not to mention nearly 1,400 yards of offense, it was the Yellowjackets who could finally celebrate after Tony Pecora's 28-yard field goal in overtime completed a 16-point comeback for a 64-61 victory.
It was over, though, and the Yellowjackets (5-4, 3-2 in 12-5A) not only picked up one of the most memorable victories in school history, but gave their playoff hopes a huge shot in the arm with one game remaining at home against the Longview Lobos.
"The one thing these kids understand is perseverance," said Rockwall head coach Rodney Webb, in his first year at the school after leading Horn to five consecutive playoff appearances from 2008-2012. "These kids have had to deal with this all year long and they were equipped to handle it and they showed it tonight."
The Yellowjackets are now 3-2 in District 12-5A with one game remaining at home against the Longview Lobos. The playoffs now become the hot topic at Rockwall High School this next week.

Capital One Bank Dallas Coach of the Week: Rodney Webb
Rodney Webb specializes in rebuilding football programs."Building the belief we can win,'' is the way Webb phrases it. He was very successful in five-year stretches at Royse City and at Horn (Mesquite), compiling an 85-44 record and nine straight playoff appearances.
Now he's in the first year of "fixing'' the Rockwall Yellowjackets. The 45-year-old has been on the job only seven months, but under his regime change Rockwall (3-2) has already equaled its win total in either of its last two seasons. For pushing the right buttons in the Yellowjackets' 24-20 victory over rival Rockwall-Heath, Webb was selected as this week's Capital One Bank Dallas Coach of the Week.Read the additional information regarding this full story at Capital One Bank Dallas Coach of the Week: Rodney Webb.

Rockwall Defeats Rockwall Heath 24-20 to Win I-30 Classic

The offense scored on three consecutive drives with a combination of a solid running game and big pass plays. Tamba Juanah led both teams in rushing with 14 carries for 92 yards. Will Reed was 14-17 for 194 yards passing including touchdown passes to Jay Galloway (40 yards and 36 yards) and Xavier Castille (23 yards.)
