Jacket Backers Award Scholarships to Deserving Rockwall High School AthletesThe Rockwall High School Jacket Backers Booster Club was formed to work with the Rockwall Community helping provide scholarships for deserving high school athletes. Community Service, Athletic Accomplishments and Academic Evaluations were some of the criteria factored into who would be the recipient of these awards.
For the 2018-2019 school year; Brette Thornton (Volleyball), Samantha Bean (Basketball/Softball), Alana Wickham (Soccer), Kendall Brown (Water Polo), Janelle Hummingbird (Swimming) and Anna Voth (Swimming) were the Student-Athletes who earned the end of the school year recognition from the Jacket Backers Scholarship Committee. These kids excelled both in their athletic ability as well as in the classroom. Rockwall businesses like Credit Union of Texas who is a proud supporter of the Jacket Backers also awarded a scholarship. Community Engagement Officer, Chris Gaston participated in the annual scholarship night presenting Basketball and Softball player, Samantha Bean with a $1000 scholarship. Samantha will be playing softball at the University of Alabama Birmingham in the fall.
The Wendi Conley Team Celebrates Rockwall Softball Lady Jackets Home RunsThe Rockwall community is filled with special businesses that care and support Rockwall High School. The Wendi Conley Team powered by Fathom Realty is one of those community partners that stepped up to the plate for Rockwall Lady Jackets Softball Team donating $50 to the Rockwall Jacket Backers for each home run produced by the players throughout the season.
Although the season came to a close with the Lady Jackets finishing as the 6A Texas Area Champions losing out to Belton in the Regional Quarter Finals; there were a lot of great memories for the girls. The season started off with Junior, Lexi Coward hitting a Saturday long ball in February versus McKinney North and ended with Senior Arkansas Signee Reagan Swindall hitting her first home run over the fence during the Area Championship Game versus Plano. Junior, Ella Laurence and Sam Bean, University Alabama-Birmingham Signee each had a two home run game against Keller and Tyler Lee respectively. Junior, Paige Harris, Abilene Christian Commit crushed a shot in early April during district play versus Mesquite Horn. Freshman, Elizabeth Schaefer, Oklahoma State Commit, and Ashly Minor also produced home runs in their first year as varsity players with Schaefer’s coming in the Bi-District win over Killeen Shoemaker. Megan Hampton, Carter Smith each rounded the bases along with Swindall (3 separate times) for inside the park homers. Bean led the team with 5 round trips while Swindall finished with 4. Brooke Barron, Madison Salazar, Maddie Barnes, Hanah Hill, Carter Smith and Kampbell Coker, University of Arkansas Monticello Commit also added home runs for the Junior Varsity squad with Barron sending one deep in the regular season opener versus Keller.
In the end, The Wendi Conley Team is donating $1500 to the Rockwall High School Jacket Backers Scholarship Fund. Not only is the Rockwall Realty Group committed to helping families during the home buying process; they are also very supportive of Rockwall High School. The Wendi Conley Team has truly hit it out of the park with their generous donation! Jacket Backers Making a Difference in Student’s LivesThe Rockwall Jacket Backer Student Scholarship Program provides financial support to graduating student athletes who meet the eligibility requirements as defined by the association. The purpose of the Student Scholarship Fund is to recognize senior students currently involved in Rockwall ISD-sponsored athletic teams and athletic training who exhibit excellent performance in the class room and dedication to community service. Recently, the Jacket Backers received a thoughtful email from a Rockwall High School Alumni and recipient of a 2014 scholarship.
Rebecca Voth, a former RHS Varsity Swimmer utilized her scholarship from the Jacket Backers while she was at Baylor University. The funds helped her with book costs and her cap and gown for graduation. Ms. Voth will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with concentrations in Political Science, International Studies, Spanish and Philosophy. She is contemplating either teaching English in Mexico on a Fulbright Scholarship or attending Pepperdine Law School on a full ride scholarship. She gives credit to the Jacket Backers. “None of these opportunities I have would have been possible without the generous support of groups like Jacket Backers that allowed me to pursue the incredible education I received at Baylor and graduate debt-free. Stories like this one, demonstrate how the Jacket Backers organization makes a difference in the lives of RHS students.
